What the Results Mean for MRAA Advocacy and Recreational Boating

Below are some high-level takeaways from the 2026 midterm election. I’ve broken them down based upon takeaways and what it means for both recreational boating and how will the MRAA will work with the new Congress.

Key Election Takeaways

Democrats take control of the Senate: Democrats flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats in Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. These gains give Democrats a projected Senate majority of at least 54 seats, including two independents who caucus with Democrats.

Democrats regain the House: Democrats also secured control of the House, flipping more than two dozen Republican-held districts according to early Associated Press reporting. Several races remain uncalled, meaning the final majority could change.

Traditionally Republican states shift: Particularly notable were Democratic Senate victories in Kansas, which had not elected a Democratic senator since 1932, and Texas, which had not done so since 1988. South Carolina also elected its first Democratic senator since 1998.

What This Means for MRAA

The incoming Congress will bring significant changes in committee leadership, legislative priorities and congressional relationships. For MRAA, the immediate implications include:

• New congressional leadership: Changes to committees overseeing transportation, natural resources, commerce and small business will require renewed engagement.
• Divided government: Bipartisan cooperation will become increasingly important for advancing recreational boating legislation.
• State-level advocacy: Changes in governorships and legislative control could influence boating access, taxation, environmental regulations and marine dealer policies.
