Find Your Salesperson Superpower

• Best Practice for Overcoming Price Objections: Listen to Your Customers More Than You Talk

By Bob McCann

Many salespeople are conversationalists. That’s a great asset since you’re dealing with new people every day. But to make a sale, you must also be an excellent listener.

Listening is the best way to learn how to help a customer and overcome their price objections. People like to talk about themselves. Ask questions, then actively listen to the answers to learn about their wants and needs and build rapport.

What questions do you ask? Why are they buying the boat? What’s their budget? Do they need to finance? The list of questions is endless, and they are all equally as important. Let them tell you what they need. Some questions are better asked sooner in the conversation and others are best to ask when you’ve earned the right to do so.

This is why the MRAA developed a Guest Survey, to helps salespeople ask ALL the right questions and do so in an order that makes sense. Pay attention to details. Ask clarifying questions to understand any gray areas and create connection. The more you know, the better both of you will understand what your customers want and need.

The Guest Survey is fully explained in the MRAAtraining.com course, “Improve Sales Productivity by Focusing on the Customer Interview.”

To be a good listener requires practice using MRAA’s Guest Survey, to the point that questions are automatic, and you can focus on your listening skills that are detailed in the MRAA course, “Learn to Love Role Playing.”

When you reach the point that your customer is now talking more than you are, it’s time to take your customer-specific knowledge and demonstrate how the prospective boat will fulfill their specific needs. Additionally, it’s imperative that you learn their personal information along the way as your customer gets more comfortable with you. This will help you execute on the follow-up touchpoints, when you are conversing more about them personally rather than talking about the weather and if they are now ready to buy!

To develop this habit, we borrowed an effective acronym from Sam Dantzler (Wheelhouse College), “FORMAT,” and integrated it into the survey to remind your entire sales team to note the customer’s Family, Occupation, Recreation, Motivation, Animals and Teams.

Great listening, matched with outstanding knowledge of the product, makes it easier to overcome price objections.

It’s important to know both how to listen to customers and to know about the boats you’re selling and selling against. You need to be a boat expert. Consumers want someone who can discuss the boat’s features and how they will benefit them and meet their shared needs. Buyers today do their homework, will ask questions to test your knowledge and confirm their selection.

Along with knowing individual boat facts, every salesperson should know their current inventory. Be ready to offer a different boat if the buyer doesn’t like the model they came in to see. This includes new, Certified Pre-Owned, and pre-owned boats.

A good conversation goes a long way in building a solid relationship with a potential boat buyer. Don’t be a pushy salesperson. Along with being authentic and honest, be a good listener and meet their needs to create a better customer experience. Knowing when to talk and when to be quiet is a fundamental skill to help your sales team unlock its superpowers.

2023 Boat Show Season Underway

• Week One of the New Year Brings With it Boats Shows, Dealers & Shoppers

The 2023 boat show season kicks off this week. There’s the Discover Boating Nashville Boat Show, which runs Jan. 5-8 at the Music City Center in Tennessee. Many boat shows are back on the docket this year, including nearly a dozen brought to you by Discover Boating.

That means your sales and marketing teams can use these gatherings as way to connect, re-connect and introduce the boating lifestyle and ownership to customers all over North America. Help them discover why life on the water is a rewarding and healthy experience.

The Discover Boating Nashville Boat Show, in partnership with Progressive Insurance, started yesterday and runs through Sunday, Jan. 8 in Tennessee.

Discover Boating, powered by NMMA and MRAA, will provide a more connected experience for show attendees and exhibitors alike in 2023. Its marketing campaigns have been designed to reach a broad audience and welcome the next generation of boaters by attracting outdoor enthusiasts, loyal boaters and future boat owners. The 2023 Discover Boating boat and sport shows will also feature more prominent branding both onsite and online. This was part of a major rebranding initiative launched last year by Discover Boating.

Discover Boating has thought hard about how to appeal to a wide-ranging audience and offer the best possible customer experience, with inclusive messaging that invites everyone to share in the boating lifestyle. Here are just a few examples:

The new Discover Boating Boat & Sport Show Promotional Toolkit can help businesses promote their presence at the Discover Boating shows via social shares, web posts, eblasts and more using the new branded marketing assets.  They include Discover Boating show logos specific to each market.

  • Introduction of “Beach Club” Consumer Experience in Chicago & New York

Announced over the holiday break, the new Discover Boating Beach Club will bring the summer vibe by creating a unique experience for both newcomers and avid boaters. This means live entertainment, celebrity chefs, mixology demos and samples, live DJ sets, wake-surfing demos and test rides, and more. Visit ChicagoBoatShow.com/features to get a glimpse of what’s in store at Chicago’s Discover Boating Beach Club.

This valuable tool helps consumers find boat dealers that are close to them. Marine Industry Certified Dealerships get top billing in the tool that is designed to connect boat sellers with boat buyers and create a seamless customer experience.

Dealer Locator Tool

Prior to the 2023 Discover Boating boat show season, NMMA launched a new digital platform, Discover Boating® Boat Finder. Consumers can find the brands and models that match their unique needs and help them locate the product. They can take an immersive dive into their preferred models’ features, connect with the boat brand websites and learn where to find their selected boat at an upcoming show and connect with a dealer before they attend the event.

These resources, including Apps, videos, images and interactive tools, exist to help dealers and industry stakeholders inform, educate and excite their customers about the boating lifestyle.

Boat Finder’s Boat Loan Calculator is another valuable tool available to consumers to help them shop for and purchase a vessel. Summit Finance Group has come on board as official sponsor of Discover Boating Boat Finder’s Boat Loan Calculator for 2023 boat shows. Summit Finance Group will attend each show, meet with attendees and will assist in the boat financing process.

As you can clearly see, the Discover Boating brand is more front and center at boat shows with its branding and consumer connectivity. From searching for a boat, finding a dealer, understanding how much boat they can afford, shopping for a boat and attending a boat show in person to see, feel and buy their dream vessel, Discover Boating is serving as a guide for consumers. This goes for boating devotees and newcomers alike thanks to a welcoming and immersive experiences that make boat shopping fun. And beyond that, Discover Boating also includes post-sale educational guidance for operation and ownership.

Nikki Storey: 2022 Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year

MINNEAPOLIS — The MRAA Educational Foundation announces that Nikki Storey, President of the Great Lakes Boat Building School (GLBBS), was named the 2022 Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year. The Award was presented to Storey, the 36th recipient, as part of the Dealer Week Awards Luncheon Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Austin, Texas.

Nikki Storey

Nikki didn’t grow up in the boating industry or on the water, but as the “Can Do Kid,” an endearing label her grandfather Otto gave her, she’s making waves far beyond her small-town Michigan roots. President of GLBBS since 2020, she leads a team of professionals committed to providing students with exceptional, hands-on instruction focused on developing the broad knowledge and skills required for careers in the maritime industry. The school’s mission is to “prepare students for rewarding careers in the marine industry” with the vision “to be the leader in marine workforce development.” The school has posted a 100 percent graduate employer placement rate for the past 5 years.

A native of Pickford, Michigan, Nikki graduated from Lake Superior State University with a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Management and Human Resources. Her professional career began at her university and later at War Memorial Hospital. Since setting sail at GLBBS in 2015, she hasn’t looked back, quickly rising from Business Manager to Executive Director a year later, to her current leadership role. She championed the school through a national accreditation process which facilitated Federal Title IV, HEA financial aid opportunities for students, added the Marine Service Technology program in 2019 and forging a partnership with Mercury University to offer Mercury Marine Service Certification. In addition, GLBBS now offers the opportunity to test for ABYC Certifications along with teaching the hands-on skills development component.

Nikki Storey, the 2022 Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year recipient was recognized at MRAA’s Dealer Week in Austin, Texas.

Her goals  moving forward are to continue to expand industry relationships with manufacturers, dealers and marinas as well as to seek more GLBBS students by expanding the facility and doubling their ability to prepare students for the marine industry and building an enhanced pipeline of talent.

In her application, Nikki shared, “This is the most positive impact our school can have – transforming students’ lives and helping to address the biggest challenge the marine industry is currently facing now and in the long-term.”

The Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year Award is named after the late Darlene Briggs of Wayzata, Minn., who was admired for her tireless dedication to the marine industry. The MRAA and Boating Industry magazine together present the award to honor her memory. It is presented annually to an outstanding woman who is actively involved in the marine industry at any level. It recognizes long and devoted service, untiring commitment, and the advancement of women in the marine business.

“Nikki Storey’s commitment to the advancement of the marine industry makes her an obvious choice for this year’s Darlene Briggs Marine Woman of the Year Award,” said Jeff Siems, Chairman of the MRAA Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – December 15 – The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas has named this year’s marine industry Great Dealerships to Work For. The dealerships were honored on December 7, at Dealer Week 2022, the association’s annual conference and expo, in Austin, Texas.

A record 27 dealerships qualified for recognition by earning an overall score of 90 percent or better on the Marine Industry Certified Dealership Program’s annual Employee Satisfaction Survey. After their employees complete the survey, and the dealership receives its 13-page survey report, the whole team meets and discusses what the dealership is doing great and what they could be doing better for their employee culture.

“Our Certified Dealers work hard each year to continue to improve their employee experience by not only surveying their teams and learning more about their work culture, but also by working with their teams to create solutions to issues identified by the survey,” said Liz Keener, MRAA Certification Manager. “Many dealers find the Employee Satisfaction Survey is one of the most beneficial elements of the Certification program, as their team is integral to their success.”

Massachusetts Creates State Office of Outdoor Recreation

• New Office Bolsters Its $9.5 Billion Outdoor Recreation Economy

BOSTON — December 13 — Massachusetts became the 18th state to establish an Office of Outdoor Recreation, drawing praise from Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR) and bolstering the ability of the nation’s $862 billion outdoor recreation economy to grow even more. The Marine Retailers Association of the Americas (MRAA) is a founding member of the ORR and works closely with the coalition to support the establishment of these offices throughout the country, especially when supported by local Marine Trade Associations.

Massachusetts’ Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito welcomed an enthusiastic audience full of recreation and conservation advocates to celebrate the new office, which will be housed in the Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs. In establishing the new office, the Baker/Polito Administration is making a strong commitment to the Commonwealth’s economy, public health and wellness, equitable access to the outdoors, and increasing collaboration and investment in this vital industry.

Massachusetts joins Maryland and Arkansas as the most recent states to create an Office of Outdoor Recreation since 2020. Eighteen states across the country now have offices dedicated to growing the outdoor recreation economy, announced in 2021 to have been an $862 billion economy (1.9 percent of GDP) that creates 4.5 million American jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). In the same announcement, BEA noted that Massachusetts’ outdoor recreation economy generated $9.5 billion in GDP (1.5 percent of state GDP), and 93,422 jobs.

“The creation of the Office of Outdoor Recreation is a huge step forward for Massachusetts, a state that offers a wide diversity of outstanding recreation opportunities,” said Jessica Turner, President, Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. “Outdoor recreation in Massachusetts grew 24 percent in the past year, helping create jobs, supporting rural communities, and promoting conservation of the Commonwealth’s natural resources. We thank the Commonwealth of Massachusetts — including Governor Baker, Lieutenant Governor Polito, and Secretary Card — for their leadership in recognizing outdoor recreation’s importance and look forward to working with them to make sure residents and visitors alike benefit from access to outdoor recreation for generations to come.”

“Recognizing the critical importance outdoor recreation plays to both the state and national economy, we are pleased to support the establishment of the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation,” said Randall Lyons, Executive Director, Massachusetts Marine Trades Association. “The recreational boating industry in Massachusetts contributes over 4 billion dollars to the state economy and employs over 20,000 men and women within the state. For every $1 spent on transient dockage it equates to close to $4 to the local community where the visiting boater is docked. Boaters are helping to fuel the economy by spending money on shopping, restaurants, lodging, fuel and more.”

The MRAA and all of our Massachusetts members appreciate the leadership taken by the Baker-Polito Administration in creating the Office of Outdoor Recreation and applaud this win for recreational boating in the Bay state.

– Chad Tokowicz, MRAA Government Relations Manager

“The MRAA and all of our Massachusetts members appreciate the leadership taken by the Baker-Polito Administration in creating the Office of Outdoor Recreation and applaud this win for recreational boating in the Bay state” said Chad Tokowicz, MRAA Government Relations Manager. “As a native Bay Stater, I know personally the history and heritage boating has in the Commonwealth and it makes me proud that this will only be further celebrated and supported through the creation of the Office of Outdoor Recreation.”

“The RV industry applauds the creation of an Office of Outdoor Recreation in Massachusetts, exemplifying the state’s commitment to prioritizing the growth of outdoor recreation and support the thriving RV industry,” said RV Industry Association Vice President of Government Affairs Jay Landers. “In addition to outdoor recreation as a whole, this office supports the more than 200 RV businesses who create nearly 6,000 jobs and pay $451 million in wages in Massachusetts.”

“Coming on the heels of the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ data release highlighting the power of the outdoor recreation economy, today’s announcement from Lieutenant Governor Polito is welcomed news for the robust outdoor recreation industry,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, President, National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). “Driven by recreational boating and fishing, the $862 billion outdoor recreation economy is on a strong trajectory. The formation of a Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation further strengthens our economic impact while enhancing the economic competitiveness of Massachusetts.”

“The Confluence of States is delighted to welcome Massachusetts as the nation’s next state to establish an office of outdoor recreation,” said Colin Robertson, Chair of the Confluence of States and Administrator of the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation.  “Massachusetts joins other northeastern states to develop an office including Confluence members Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont, who are among the 17 members of the Confluence of States. We look forward to working with Massachusetts to strengthen the outdoor recreation industry across state lines through our four core principles: conservation and stewardship; education and workforce development; economic development; and public health. Congratulations to each organization and outdoor leader who ushered this inaugural office. We are celebrating this historic moment with you.”
